HAPPY APRIL FOOLS DAY!!!

James Randi Foundation hands out annual 'Flying Pig Award to NASA astrobiologist (and others such as 'Dr.' Andrew Wakefield) for supposedly finding life within meteorites on April Fools Day!
When NASA astrobiologist Richard Hoover announced, again, last month that he'd found evidence of microscopic life on meteorites, he probably didn't expect to receive the high honor of a Flying Pig Award.
But now, the man who some claim is the scientific equivalent of the boy who cried wolf, is getting honored for an achievement some say is dubious.

SETI releases Android phone app which allows users to help 'hunt' for aliens

The Seti Institute launched a private beta test on Thursday of SetiQuest Explorer in the hope that amateur astronomers will help with tasks that cannot be done well by computers. The app runs on Android 2.2 but will be available on the iPhone this summer. There is also a desktop version for any computer running Flash Player 10.2. "We want to tap into the brain power of the world," Jill Tarter, director of the non-profit Seti (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) Institute, said.

Founder of the Institute for Security and Cooperation in Space to propose treaty banning weapons in space by Earthlings and aliens!

It's a good thing the outer space battles in "Star Wars" happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away -- because under a new space-based weapons treaty drafted by aerospace and military experts, humans and aliens alike would be barred from waging war above Earth.

a warlock who worships the goddess of the moon, curfews can be a bit of a hindrance.  So when Cerwyn Jones found himself being punished by a court for carrying a five-inch ceremonial knife in a pub he was quick to plead special Wiccan circumstances.  The 52-year-old was sentenced to four months of staying indoors between the hours of 7pm and 7am.

Astrologers believe 'supermoon' may be at fault for the Japanese earthquake
The powerful tsunami that today slammed into Japan's eastern coast comes just two days after warnings that the movement of the moon could trigger unpredictable events on Earth.  Astrologers predicted that on March 19 - a week tomorrow - the so-called 'supermoon' will be closer to Earth than at any time since 1992, just 221,567 miles away, and that its gravitational pull will bring chaos to Earth.

...but The Bad Astronomer Phil Plait says otherwise about the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and gives links to relief organizations
The magnitude 8.9 earthquake that hit Japan last night has done a vast amount of damage. I’m seeing lots of information scattered around the web, and figured a post listing them might help.  First, if you need info about the quake, CNET has a long list of links for finding lost loved ones, information on the quake in general, and more.

Speculation abound over video of the 'Ropen' (demon flyer), a living dinosaur flying in the skies of Papua, New Guinea
The person who recorded and posted one of two YouTube videos claims it shows something huge, reptilian, and mysterious flying above a Papua New Guinea beach. He tries to describe it as definitive proof that the Ropen, a "living dinosaur," has finally been caught on video; it's a claim that supports what many creationists believe is evidence that humans and dinosaurs actually lived (and still live) at the same time. However, after all the pop-up captions, commentaries, and a few blurry camera shots, the claim that the ropen does exists appears to be premature.

Heinrich Himmler hired alchemist to create gold out of stone at Dachau concentration camp
Nazi chiefs believed they could turn stones, sand and soil into gold, according to a new book.  Heinrich Himmler, head of Hitler's SS police force, was tricked into thinking that precious metals could be produced in this way - and then used to buy weapons to strengthen the Third Reich.  The Nazis set up a secret unit in the Dachau concentration camp before the Second World War, and appointed Karl Malchus, an alchemist, who convinced Himmler that he could make gold from stones, soil and even paraffin.

Research done by analyst at MIT reveals whats behind many of the recent UFO sightings over China
Those probably were not UFOs that hovered over China recently, a Massachusetts Institute of Technology analyst said.  The images of the UFOs have caused quite a stir in China and on blogs around the world.  But many of the images appear to be faked with the software program Photoshop and the ones that were not faked seem to depict the launch of a Chinese ballistic missile, said Geoffrey Forden, an MIT weapons analyst.
Forden, who also specializes in Russian and Chinese space systems, published his analysis on a blog called "Arms Control Wonk."
